Nike athlete Mo Farah is one of the UK’s best-loved athletes and its most successful distance runner. Mo is the reigning World and Olympic Champion over 5,000m and 10,000m, as well as holding the British record over his two favoured distances he also holds it for the 1,500m, 3,000m and half marathon.
We spent some time with him up-close in an exclusive interview to find out what keeps him motivated, what his aims are for the future, and how he spends his downtime.
MF – One or two things I’m definitely doing that are key to my success are I’m a lot stronger, in terms of, not just running, but stuff outside of running like running on an underwater treadmill, going to the gym, working on my core and on my strength. I’m working on every little thing.
MF – My ultimate achievement is just being a father. I think it’s the most beautiful thing, having a family, having my twins and my oldest daughter Rhianna, and my son now: it’s pretty incredible.
MF – My future aim is to keep running, stay strong, hopefully, with Rio coming up, and then I’ve got another year to the 2017 world champs, and then after that, go to the road. That’s my aim, that’s my target.
MF – Just be strong, believe in yourself and just work hard at what you do and you can achieve your dreams. It’s like something I love and started doing as a youngster as a hobby and then became more like a job, but I love what I do, and people out there that want to go out running and other stuff, just enjoy it and believe in yourself and as long as you give 110% that’s all you can do. You can’t do more or less.
MF – The important thing when you’re training hard is to make sure you recover. For example, I do 120 miles a week, week in, week out, so in terms of after my session, I try to eat in the first 20 minutes to get the muscles recovered again. The night before, make sure you eat loads of carbs, a bit of protein, which gives you energy, and stay hydrated. That’s the important thing. It’s not like you should go “I shouldn’t eat this, I shouldn’t eat that,” you burn off a lot of stuff and it’s important that you give the body what it needs.
MF – What do I like to do in my downtime … I like to play FIFA with the boys, Charlie Grice, I think he’s at the back there. Yeah, FIFA and kill a bit of time. I don’t get a lot of downtime, but when I do just play computer games, enjoy it and be happy.
