With an abundance of choice it’s no surprise that we’re regularly asked, ‘What kind of spike should I use?’ Spikes are designed for a variety of disciplines from sprinting to the triple jump, so below we help you to identify the differences to help you make a more informed choice.

Distance: 60m - 400m
Spike Size: - 6mm
Ultra lightweight, sprint spikes have a stiff soleplate, usually made from Pebax®, for support and propulsion to drive you forward.

Jumping
Triple Jump, Pole Vault, High Jump, Long Jump
Spike Size: 3mm - 9mm
Jumping spikes have a full length midsole for cushioning and stability when landing. Triple jump spikes usually have a more supportive heel to handle the three plants of the discipline.

Middle Distance
Distance: 800m – 1500m
Spike Size: - 6mm
Built with additional cushioning and a breathable upper, middle distance spikes are lightweight and less rigid but offer more support than sprint spikes.

Throwing
Discuss, Hammer, and Shotput
Spike Size: 9mm - 15mm*
Javelin spikes have both front and rear spikes for traction during the plant phase of the throw whereas spikes for shotput, hammer and discus are made to glide to allow for rotation. *Spike length limited to 9mm for Javelin events.

Long distance spikes have more cushioning and are designed with more durable materials as they’re built to withstand force over longer periods of time.

Cross Country
Distance: 3k+
Spike Size: 6mm - 15mm
Cross country spikes provide better traction on grass or loose dirt than any other types. Spikes also provide a slight upward curve compared to regular racing flats, naturally encouraging you to run on your toes, making it easier to run faster.

What’s the difference between Pyramid and Tartan spikes?

Pyramid spikes are a popular choice for both track and field as they perform well on both rubber and grass. They are conical in shape and taper to a point.

Tartan Track is a trademarked synthetic track surface. Spikes designed for Tartan rubber tracks are relatively thin and a combination of a pin and a pyramid spike.
