Background

When considering the ultimate race day shoe ASICS where the only brand that considered how individuals ran. Aimed at racers who increase the length of their stride when they speed up, rather than just increasing their cadence (number of strides per minute) the Metaspeed Sky + aims to help you take longer strides, as well as conserve energy in each step.

The original shoe featured FF Blast turbo cushioning and a curved carbon plate, in a just race legal stack to give you every edge possible. A firmer feel than most of the competition set it aside from the crowd and created a stiff feel throughout the transition. Let’s see how they have updated this winning formula to improve your speeds even further.

Closer Look

The Velvet pine/Safety Yellow colourway may look like an unripe banana to some, but there is no point trying to hide your shoes when you are on the top of the podium! Bold, bright, and fun, the launch colour scheme is available here at Pro:Direct Running.

The two main tools ASICS use to provide propulsion and that incredibly responsive feel, are the carbon plate, and the FF Blast Turbo midsole foam. More foam equals more energy return, and with that in mind ASICS have managed to squeeze in an extra 4% volume of foam for increased bounce. Despite the increased foam, the overall weight has only increased by 6g, about the weight of a postcard.

While we are talking about the volume of foam, it is worth reminding ourselves that the FF Blast Turbo foam is 33% lighter, and offers 13% more bounce than ASICS other super foam, FF Blast.

Slightly less curved than in the previous version, the carbon plate now gives a faster rebound, and requires less energy to bend on landing. The Plate has also been moved closer to the ground, giving you more cushioning above the plate, for improved comfort and increased cushioning.

The effect of these two improvements is to slightly soften the firmness of the previous version, improving comfort and performance, but still maintain that firm feel and super smooth transition from landing to toe off.

The upper has also been improved, with a new Motion Wrap fabric offering a lightweight and breathable feel, made from a woven jacquard mesh. Optimised reinforcements give a secure feel locking the foot into position in key zones. Shorter, serrated laces help you find that secure lockdown for a no shift fit throughout the race.

Conclusion

The ASICS Metaspeed Sky+ improves on everything the original did right, and everything it didn’t, giving you one of the best race day, carbon plated shoes out there.

More foam, an improved ride and increased comfort all give you a reason to pick up this shoe, but its unique design and geometry is also designed to improve your efficiency and lengthen your stride, saving you energy for that big sprint finish.

Having suffered from Chronic Fatigue for over a decade, I am a recent convert to the joys of running. Although every run steals a lot of energy, the mental health and fitness benefits more than make up for it. My runs are mainly across the back of the nearby beaches, dodging between the tourists. When not geeking out over the latest running tech, you can find me trying new gins, making gins, or boring anyone within earshot about gin.
