The Nike Mayfly is ideal for athletes who require lightweight running shoes for racing. Considered to be a 'disposable' shoe, the Nike Mayfly was inspired by the ideal set forth by Nike's founder Bill Bowerman, who envisioned running shoes that would provide enough support for a runner during a race, but would fall apart once that runner had crossed the finish line. Constructed with a lightweight, one-piece upper called Tyvek™ (rip-stop nylon) with an injection-moulded sole, the Nike Mayfly concept was has been based on the life cycle of the mayfly which by nature is an insect that lives, breeds and dies in one day. A warning card supplied with the shoe cautions the runner not to wear the running shoes for longer than 100km (62 miles) to emphasise the intended lifespan of the Nike Mayfly.
After the aptly named Nike Mayfly's air-bubbled foam has worn down, in an effort to reduce wastage when the shoe has worn out, its wearers can return the shoes to Nike using the return sticker originally supplied with the shoes. Nike will recycle the material which will then be used to make rubber athletic courts and tracks.
